Steven R. Peabody

CEO and Chairman of the Board
 

Peabody is the Chief Executive Officer and the Chairman of the Board of VoCare, Inc. Peabody is known for his entrepreneurial stewardship in product development and remarkable business savvy in the success of CMI – the engineering firm he acquired in 1992. Through the continuing use of new technology to streamline processes and develop new products, Peabody not only ensured that each business opportunity succeeded as a spin-off company, but also as one of the best in its respective field.

CMI has developed several hundred products for various Fortune 500 companies totaling over $250 million in revenue. Peabody has been singularly responsible for this achievement. He has also been personally involved in the product audits and certifications in the fields of: FCC; FDA; ICC; UL; ASTM; AGA; CGA; ICC; ISO9001; and TS9000.

Peabody used his vision combined with his management skill to build executive teams to turn product ideas from startups to dynamic growth companies. During his 17 years of leadership at CMI, Peabody exploited the full potential of international resources to substantially increase the capabilities of CMI as a product development company. Peabody designed, engineered, manufactured and marketed several proprietary products to a variety of industries and has received numerous awards. Peabody currently holds 17 U.S. patents under his name for a variety of products and exclusive designs. Peabody streamlined the company, by holding all the intellectual property and outsourcing manufacturing and other services, to transition easily into niche markets with new product ideas and keeping development at greatly reduced costs. He has established and still maintains numerous business relationships with a variety of high tech domestic and international manufacturers. Peabody is considered an authority on product development and has substantial expertise with supply chain management, including offshore manufacturing

Dr. Sanford Kunkel

Dr. Kunkel specializes in Orthopedic Surgery at OrthoIndy, and brings his years of success to VoCare’s Board of Directors. Dr. Kunkel graduated cum laude from Indiana University in 1978, where he was a Phi Betta Kappa. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982. Dr. Kunkel completed a categorical year in orthopedic surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1983. He completed his residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids in 1987. He completed fellowships in sports medicine and knee reconstruction at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1987 and shoulder reconstruction at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1988. Dr. Kunkel is a consultant for Brebeuf Preparatory School and is an independent examiner for the NFL. He has made many presentations to professional groups and published numerous articles in medical journals. Dr. Kunkel is a clinical lecturer at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the National Basketball Association Team Physician Society and other medical organizations. He served as the team physician for the Indiana Pacers from 1988 to 2004 and the Indiana Fever from 2004 to 2006. Dr. Kunkel also served as the president of the NBA Team Physicians Society.

Scott Weaver

After attending Ball State University, Weaver began his career was in tax consulting where he helped DuCharme, McMillen & Assoc. Inc., become one of the largest companies in its field. He then founded Innovative Consulting Services which merged with BKD, where he became one of the nation’s first non-degreed direct entry partners in a Big 12 accounting firm. In 1997 Scott left BKD to enter the field of venture capitalism. By 2002 he had founded and sold two successful startups and become president and a partner of AGS Capital LLC, which became a top 10 Indianapolis Venture Capital firm. In 2010 Scott left AGS, and he is now president of SAW Capital LLC. SAW’s portfolio companies include Grocers Supply Company, GS Transportation LLC, and P2P Solutions, LLC.

SAW has also made investments in VoCare, LLC, a telehealth technology company, WordSentry, LLC, a cutting edge technology for enhanced communications compliance across messaging platforms, CasperSMS, Inc., text messaging, marketing and alerts and S P Technologies, LLC, manufacturers of ‘Smart Power’ appliances for charging and powering ‘Smart’ devices. Weaver serves on the Boards of each of these companies.

Weaver is an active member of the community and serves as the Chairman of the RHI Foundation and on the board of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.

Anthony N. Akosa, MD, MBA

Dr. Akosa brings an extensive background working with health plans and the full care continuum as a board-certified family practice physician to VoCare’s Board of Directors. In addition to serving as a practicing physician, which enables him to remain in touch with the patient experience in healthcare, Dr. Akosa currently oversees corporate medical policy, population health management and practice transformation for HealthEC, and serves on the Board 4 of Directors of Population Health Alliance (PHA). Dr. Akosa previously served as vice president of medical affairs for ADVANTAGE Health Solutions, an Indiana-based, provider-owned health plan providing managed care solutions. Dr. Akosa completed his family practice residency at the Indiana University Medical Center in 1995 and has remained on the faculty. Dr. Akosa earned his MBA in finance from the Indiana University Kelley Graduate School of Business in 2002.

James Anderson, Jr., M.D., FFPM, FACE

Dr. Anderson is a diabetologist and endocrinologist who has been in military medicine and the pharmaceutical industry for more than 40 years. A graduate of Centenary College of Louisiana, he earned his M.D. degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, followed by Internship and Internal Medicine Residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Anderson began his Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at LSU and completed it at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Following his training, he served as Chief of Medicine at the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, Ft. Detrick, Maryland where he continued his studies of the effect of infection on diabetes as well as worked on biological warfare defense, vaccines, and safe care of patients with high hazard infectious diseases. He also served as the safety physician for the very first Level 3 recombinant DNA experiments performed by the US NIH. Lt. Col. Anderson then moved to Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas where he served as Chairman of the Department of Clinical Investigation and Consultant to the Surgeon General of the Army for Clinical Investigation. During that time he acquired the Army’s first artificial pancreas to aid in the investigation of immune factors in the etiology of diabetes. While in San Antonio, he also was an independent investigator for Lilly’s development of rDNA human insulin for therapeutic use.

Dr. Anderson then joined Eli Lilly and Company where he was responsible for Lilly’s global clinical diabetes/endocrine development program. He managed diabetes and cardiometabolic drug development, and drove the clinical development, registration and launch of two families of billion dollar diabetes care products, Humulin® (human insulin of rDNA origin) and Humalog®, the first rapid-acting analog of human insulin for which he is one of the inventors. He led the clinical development and was responsible for 6 US NDAs, and had clinical responsibility for all insulin products worldwide.   He also evaluated and conducted the initial clinical development of human insulin and insulin analog pre-mixtures, basal insulin analogs, pulmonary and oral insulin as well as a small molecule, oral drugs for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Anderson re-focused the strategic clinical direction for marketed products and investigational drugs, the conduct of global clinical trials and the clinical development of numerous compounds in Phase I- Phase IV. He held pivotal roles directing Lilly’s endocrine products in Japan, global medical-marketing, internal discovery, and in-licensing opportunities. He was the first in the industry to envision and accomplish a strategic concurrent global clinical development and registration program, which secured a first to market position for Lilly’s Humalog. Prior to retiring from Lilly, Dr. Anderson led the initial development of Lilly’s newest drug for diabetes – dulaglutide [Trulicity™] (which is Lilly’s third billion-dollar diabetes drug).

A strong believer in education, Dr. Anderson has served on the medical faculties of LSU School of Medicine, Medical College of Virginia, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and Indiana University School of Medicine where he is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine for the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Internationally recognized, Dr. Anderson is an elected Fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK and was a founding board member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Physicians. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. He is a founding editorial board member of two journals for diabetes, and serves on the editorial boards or is a reviewer for 5 other diabetes/endocrine journals. He has also served in local, regional and national positions with the American Diabetes Association.

In addition to serving as Medical Director for PTS Diagnostics in Indianapolis, he currently holds positions as President and CEO of MitoZyme Inc (Carmel, IN and Boston), CEO of Diabetes and CardioMetabolic Disease Solutions Group (Carmel) and Medical Director of Know Labs (Seattle). Dr. Anderson has served as Senior Scientific Advisor and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Generex Biotechnology Corporation (Miramar, Florida and Burlington, Ontario).

 

James (Zhibo) Lu

Global Source One (GSO)
 

Lu brings many years of experience in product/process development and quality management to VoCare’s Board of Directors. Lu established Global Source One (GSO), a multinational company that provides supply chain management for companies that need high quality products and competitive production solutions. Lu has also developed a number of qualified suppliers and affiliated factories in China to produce parts for many customers in the North American market, with products ranging from appliances, automotive, drilling, to general industries such as packaging and printing. Before he founded his company in 2004, Lu worked at Cummins for 8 years, where he led a quality program for electronic components and engine parts designed to work with many suppliers for product and manufacturing process development and improvement.

Dr. Gary Wright

CEO/Medical Director of Meridian Health Group
 

Wright brings an extensive medical and entrepreneurial background to VoCare. Wright presently serves as the Chief Executive Officer/Medical Director of Meridian Health Group and as a Partner with the Indiana Surgery Center.

Wright previously served as CEO of Methodist Occupational Health Centers. In this role, he developed the business plan for the Harcourt Clinic which was ultimately purchased by the investment arm of Methodist Hospital.

Among other business initiatives, Wright developed a process which ended the outsourcing of physical therapy, instead bringing therapy “in-house”, which resulted in a dramatic increase in revenue. Wright was the principle founder of Summex, Inc., an Indianapolis-based firm that provided employee population health management services to employers, hospital systems, and managed care organizations. In 2006, Summex was sold to WebMD for over $30,000,000.

Dr. Wright is a Member of the Stanley K Lacey Executive Leadership Program and is the only physician that has been accepted to the program sponsored by the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.
